• Playa de Guardamar. The sea can get a little choppy here, but it's ideal for watersports and the fine sand is a taste of the Caribbean.

• Playa del Postiguet. Excellent for swimming, this expansive arc of golden sand is ripe for sunbathing, with sunbeds and parasols for hire.

• Playa de la Almadraba. Small but perfectly formed, this pretty beach boasts fantastic sunsets and is normally crowd free.

• Playa del Coco. This smaller beach has a small harbour where fishermen still work today. Watch them bring in the catch of the day.

• Del Cura National Artistic Garden. Elche gardens are a fascinating heritage site, with over 200,000 palm trees, as well as bamboo, cactus and flowers.

• Castle of Santa Babara. One of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and free to visit, here you'll find cannons, dungeons and a moat.

• MARQ. Take a journey through time. Galleries and displays of urban and underwater archaeology with historical information.

• Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. Permanent and temporary exhibitions host many styles of fascinating artwork. Free to enter with a guide book provided.

• Tour Alicante on segway. See the town, beaches and port with a king size segway experience. Training is provided to anyone aged 10 to 70.

• Discover the city on foot. Visit some of the main sites on a free historical tour, covering the effects of the Spanish civil war on Alicante.

• Go parasailing and paragliding. Just 2 of the many outdoor activities available; fully trained professionals provide an exciting and safe experience.

• Climb Monte Benacantil. Not a climb for the faint hearted, when you reach the summit you'll find breathtaking vistas of the ocean and town.

• La Guitarreria Tablao Flamenco. The art of pure flamenco is seen in abundance in this bodega, where it's performed by the nation's most renowned stars.

• Parabarap pub. Have fun with friends at this low cost pub. Quality drinking and good music add to the obvious charm of this bar.

                          When To Go

 

There isn't really a bad time to visit. Alicante is perfect for some winter sun, with the average temperature rarely dropping below 10°C in November, December and January. Snow and ice are incredibly rare. During the summer holidays, the city's beaches can get quite busy. Temperatures peak in July and August, and as the kids are off school, you'll see a lot of families out enjoying the sun.
